Description

This Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet is a wholesome, one-pan meal perfect for a quick and nutritious dinner. Ground turkey is cooked with sweet potatoes, bell peppers, onions, and a blend of warm spices, all simmered together in a skillet for a comforting dish packed with flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein

  • 1 lb ground turkey

Vegetables

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Spices and Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Other

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Cook the turkey: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey and cook it while crumbling with a spoon until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook them with the turkey for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften and become fragrant.
  3. Add sweet potatoes and seasonings: Stir in the diced sweet potatoes along with the cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well so the spices coat the vegetables and meat evenly.
  4. Cover and cook: Place a lid on the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Let it cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the flavors are well combined.
  5. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and serve the dish hot. Optionally, garnish with chopped fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro or a sprinkle of cheese for added flavor.

Notes

  • To speed up cooking time, cut the sweet potatoes into smaller pieces.
  • You can substitute ground turkey with lean ground chicken or beef if preferred.
  • Add a pinch of chili powder or smoked paprika for extra smokiness and heat.
  • Serve with a side of steamed greens or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
