Ingredients
Scale
Beef Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Lemon Garlic Yogurt Sauce
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 clove garlic, grated or minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt, to taste
Assembly
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes
- 1/2 cup sliced cucumber
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
Instructions
- Cook the onion: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the chopped onion. Cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant to release its aroma.
- Brown the beef: Add ground beef along with cumin, oregano, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook thoroughly until the beef is browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Prepare yogurt sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt, lemon juice, grated garlic, olive oil, and salt until the sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Warm pitas: Slightly warm the pita breads in a pan or oven to make them soft and pliable for stuffing.
- Assemble pita sandwiches: Fill each pita bread pocket with the cooked beef mixture, then layer with chopped tomatoes, sliced cucumber, and fresh parsley.
- Serve: Drizzle the lemon garlic yogurt sauce generously over the stuffed pitas and serve immediately for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to reduce fat content while keeping the filling juicy.
- Warm the pita breads gently to prevent tearing when filling.
- The yogurt sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
- You can add chopped red onion or olives for extra flavor.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the beef.
